From time to time I come across a book that I find
so valuable
that I absolutely have to recommend to everyone I know that
will listen. How
to Make Your Car Handle was definitely one of
those books.
Written as early as the 70s, a lot of modern tuners
pass over
this book, stating that it is simply "outdated" material.
They couldn't
be any farther than the truth. Fred Puhn does an excellent job of
covering both front wheel and rear wheel drive cars, and is pretty
fair to all walks of automotive life from domestic to import. As
well,
the information in this book is easily considered classic or timeless.
Starting out with a brief description of the basic
principals behind
making a car handle well, and how we test the handling of a car,
Puhn
presents chapter after chapter of well researched information on
the
science of handling. In every concept, Puhn offers all of the physics
and scientific formulas that go along with the concept.
Luckily, Puhn never forgets to put everything back
into layman's
terms. I'm sure that many of you who hated Physics 101 with a passion
will appreciate his efforts.
One very cool chapter in the book covers the ancient
practice of
doing a manual alignment. For those of you with lowered cars, this
book can save you a great deal of money just in the description
of
how to perform your own fairly accurate alignment at home.
My one complaint for this book was that it seemed
to skim over
the topic of braking. However, the topic is discussed and he does
a
much better job than most authors have on the topic.
But, rather than give away the contents of this
book, I'm going
to end this brief review here, and give How
to Make Your Car Handle
a resounding 5 out 5 star rating. Check out the reviews on
Amazon.com,
and read the table of contents just to get an idea.
Buy it, you won't regret it if you're even slightly considering
autocross
racing or a well-handling street monster. Enjoy!
